The time has come for Piers to head up into the mountains to search for the forgotten Dwarf Infirmary. I'm going to place a "mountain hex" next to the "city hex" in my mental map. Travel from one to the other requires 1 "watch" (4 hours.) For each full watch spent traveling, I have to roll on the Travel Hazard table. The roll is a single d6. I roll a 6. It's an all clear. Piers made it into the mountains with no problems.
I'm going to require Piers to spend another shift searching for the location of the Dwarf Infirmary. I roll: "3. Depletion - Roll a d6 for each perishable item. On a 1 it has gone bad." Piers has 2 rations. I roll a 3 and a 4. All good.
Okay, here's the story so far:
Piers left the city to head up into the mountains in search of the forgotten Dwarf Infirmary. The trip was uneventful. After around 2 hours of searching, Piers stopped for lunch. He consumed one of his rations but took note that the foodstuff was not as fresh as the vendor had led him to believe. Good thing he only purchased two. At the conclusion of the fourth hour of following various traces of forgotten paths through the mountains, Piers saw the low stone building in the distance. The face of the building was seemingly carved from the Mountain itself. An old stone statue of a beardless dwarf stood before the entrance. This was it. Piers remembered reading that Dwarves who had dedicated their lives to the pacifist pursuit of healing would shave their beards. This was the Lost Dwarven Infirmary.
Added a bit of my own flavor there. It's not based on anything, just invoking a bit of my improvisational powers as GM. It's my understanding that one of the challenges with trying to have a solo RPG experience is in "GMing yourself." I don't believe that I am going to have any problems separating the roles and enjoying them each equally.
